Step Right Up!
Climbing onto flatbeds, reefers and into van trailers contributes greatly to slip and fall accidents, and to worker's compensation claims. The issue's getting some attention these days, as seen by the following new products:
Getting onto trailers now can be as easy as climbing a flight of stairs. Ten-Four Stairs Inc. (888-437-1710) has a stair system that can be welded between the frame rails at the rear of most van and platform trailers. Since material is removed to make room for the steps, there should be little or no net weight gain. Ten-Four Stairs says the device doubles as an approved rear impact guard. A hinged cover allows loading to the rear of the trailer. Shown above on a Ravens trailer.
The Pro-Step Trucker from O.B.P.H. Manufacturing Co. (800-388-6884) is an 18-pound folding aluminum ladder for climbing onto flatbed trailers (as shown here. It also doubles an ergonomic work platform at varying heights.
The company also manufactures the Pro-Step Reefer, a folding ladder that hooks into sockets at side or rear doors of van trailers and reefers. In addition, the Pro-Step Reefer has shelves for stacking boxes. It weighs 32 pounds.
Each ladder can be ordered with its own frame-mounted carrying box. Fleets that use Pro-Step ladders report significant reductions in slip-and-fall accidents and related worker's compensation claims, the company says.
