Stuff for the Long Haul

Tarpshark!

Replacing tarps can take a real bite out of your skinny bottom line. The inventors of the Tarpshark say it can extend the life of a tarp by up to eight months. Tarpsharks take the place of missing D-rings or grommets on tarps, stay put once they are attached to the tarp and can be secured with ropes or bungee cords. They are made out of anodized 6061 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum and come in seven colors. Single units sell for $8.33; a set of 12 costs $99.95 plus 3.75% Colorado state tax; price includes shipping. Go to www.tarpshark.com or call (303) 368-1139 to order.

Look Behind You

Preco, a supplier of back-up alarms and other safety accessories, has a retrofittable, radar-based backup warning system called "Preview." It figures the distance between an object and the truck's rear and sounds a warning tone that varies with distance. Call (800) 453-1141 or visit www.preco.com.

AAA Road Atlas

The 2001 AAA Professional Drivers Road Atlas lists more than 3,000 low-bridge clearance spots; 750 restricted routes; size and weight regs; haz-mat guidelines; state fuel tax rates; and other useful info. It retails for $19.95.

PNV Sold to TTI

PNV Inc. was sold in early February for $5.5 million to TTI Holdings, a subsidiary of Transcom Technologies Inc. and a sister of Transcommunications Inc., which provides Transcard, CabCard and Transfunds. The new owners must now convincing truckers to come back to the service, which left many customers angry about paying for services they didn't get. "PNV has a compelling value proposition -- providing connectivity to the long-haul trucking industry," said James Coppinger, chairman and CEO of Transcom Technologies. "We will immediately focus on our number one priority of bringing the PNV services back to life." The deal excluded the PNV.com Web site, which at press time was seeking its own buyer.

Digital Mobile TV

KVH Industries now offers in-motion digital satellite TV reception in its TracVision L3 system. The unit is said to be the first in-motion Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) system. It can receive the Dish Network, DirecTV or ExpressVU, and automatically tracks and locks onto the signal while you're rolling. You can also receive broadcast Internet services. Call (401) 847-3327 or see www.kvh.com.

ABS Dispute Threatens Truck Building

A financial dispute over a federally mandated ABS warning light threatened to stop production of new tractors and trailers on March 1, but may be resolved by the time you read this. The quiet but bitter dispute involves the "generic" electronics adopted by all makers of anti-lock braking systems to send a malfunction signal to a light on tractor dashboards. Federal rules require the warning light starting March 1.

Manufacturers thought a system called PLC4Trucks and its special circuit chip was free. But its inventor had applied for a patent, received it late last year and began requesting a $5 per vehicle licensing fee. The inventor, Al Lesesky of Vehicle Enhancement Systems in Rock Hill, S.C., said he had repeatedly warned them of his patent application, but they ignored him. Manufacturers were surprised when Lesesky got the patent last October. They angrily claimed the fee was far too high and began pressuring him to lower it. He did, to $2.50, and ABS makers -- faced with the looming deadline -- began agreeing. Lesesky said he had gotten his first signed agreement, from Eaton Corp., by early February. Others were likely to follow.

PLC4Trucks sends a coded signal from the trailer's ABS over existing wires to the tractor. This uses the standard 7-circuit connector cable and eliminates the need for a second connection between trailer and tractor -- something feared and opposed by cost-conscious fleet managers. If truck production continues beyond March 1, you'll know the dispute -- though perhaps not the hard feelings -- went away.

Bendix Fleet-tests U.S. Air Disc Brake

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems will shortly begin fleet testing its North American Air Disc Brake, the Bendix ADB 225. Designed for 22.5-inch diameter wheels, the ADB 225 has a compact mono block caliper design that makes it stronger and improves brake life, Bendix says. Sealing has been improved to extend life and lower maintenance costs. Bendix claims a 30 to 35% shorter stopping distance, fade resistance, reduced wheel pull and passenger car feel. Fleet testing is necessary to demonstrate performance and durability. Production is scheduled to begin in 2003.

Horton Fan Drives Standard on Many Internationals

Horton Inc.'s DriveMaster Fan Drive is now standard on International 8100CH, 5900I 6x4 and 9000I Series trucks with Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel engines. It is also optional on a number of other International models, as well as on Volvo trucks. DriveMaster offers lower parasitic drag than other spring-engaged fan drives, according to Horton, leaving more available horsepower and improved fuel economy. Its 2100 inch-pounds torque rating is higher than competitors' models for improved cooling of engines running 32-inch fans, Horton says. See www.hortoninc.com or call (800) 621-1320.

Bush OKs Entry of Mexican Trucks

As Road King went to press, President Bush announced he would open U.S. highways to Mexican trucks, but had not said how that would be done. The announcement came after a trade panel ruled the U.S. had violated the North American Free Trade Agreement by barring free access.

Under NAFTA, the U.S. was supposed to permit Mexican trucks to travel throughout the country starting January 2000; currently they can operate only in a narrow zone along the border. The Clinton administration had refused to allow this. Open access faced fierce opposition from the Teamsters, the Owner-Operator Independent Driver Association and safety groups that say many Mexican trucks don't meet U.S. safety standards. The trade panel ruled the U.S. can impose stiff safety standards on the Mexican trucks, but the DOT has few inspectors and can only check about 1 percent of the trucks crossing the border. It puts out of service as many as 35 percent of the trucks it does check.

Bright Idea From Taylorbrite

Taylorbrite has introduced a new series of cold cathode fluorescent (CCF) lights it says will dramatically improve interior lighting for trucks. The proprietary cold cathode fluorescent technology provides brighter, more efficient illumination and longer life, while drawing little power and giving off little heat, the company says. The lights are surface-mounted for easy factory or aftermarket installation. See www.taylormadegroup or call (941) 708-0940.

Peterbilt Upgrades Trio of Transmissions

Eaton Fuller's new FR Series 10-speed transmission has replaced the RT Series 10-speeds on Peterbilt trucks. The FR Series 10-speed (shown here) is 32 pounds lighter than comparable RT models and has wider gears, higher-capacity bearings and larger shafts. It also has a tighter shift pattern due to a new shift mechanism, an improved output seal, air system and synchronizer design promise less downtime. Peterbilt also now offers the Generation II Eaton Fuller AutoShift 9-speed transmissions. These have a new output seal for improved durability, and a new 54-spline output shaft for improved strength.

Earlier this year, Peterbilt began offering the Eaton Fuller 11-speed RTO16909ALL transmission for on-off highway vocations. Eaton Fuller has expanded the availability of its revised ratio 9ALL construction transmissions to include the RTO11909ALL and the RTO14909ALL. The new 9ALL transmissions contain the same forward gear ratios as the RTO11909MLL and RTO14909MLL models they replace. However, the reverse gear ratios have been revised. The new reverse gear ratios in the 9ALL transmissions are Lo Lo Reverse 20.85:1, Lo Reverse 13.03:1 and Hi Reverse 3.43:1.

Would U Like to See a U-turn Signal?

Do trucks and other vehicles need a signal for U-turns? Yes, says Caryn Boxer of Carson City, Nev., who was inspired after her car was nearly T-boned by a vehicle that unexpectedly whipped a U-turn. She has developed several prototypes, is talking with manufacturers and hopes to interest the automotive industry in turning the idea into a reality.

    Get DAT Services Wirelessly

Two options available now; third will be Freightliner TruckPC.

DAT Services, the largest freight exchange network, now offers owner/operators and drivers two wireless ways to access its 17,000-customer network. One way is through DAT's Wireless Network of Truckers ("WiNOT"). This allows drivers to post their trucks for free to DAT's freight exchange network using wireless phone connectivity and a free truck-posting-only account.

The second means is DRIVERNet pK, a two-way wireless messaging service available only from DRIVERNet. DAT Services is now the exclusive provider of load information. DRIVERNet pK uses the HandSpring Visor PDA to offer a suite of driver services in a portable and easy-to-use technology. A third means is waiting in the wings for owners and drivers of Freightliner vehicles. DAT is working with Freightliner on an in-cab service using Freightliner's Truck Productivity Computer (TruckPC) to provide wireless Internet access to DAT Services.

The TruckPC, (shown here), which goes into production later this year, is design to fit into any commercial truck with a single DIN radio slot. The TruckPC centralizes a number of functions -- AM/FM/CD stereo, truck performance monitor, and even the "brain" of a PC -- and uses the Microsoft Windows -- system common to personal digital assistants. Truck PC also will feature voice recognition software, so drivers never have to take their eyes off the road to get information. Truckers who want the free WiNOT service may call the DAT Services Customer Contact Center at (800) 328-5317. TruckPC will be available to customers through Freightliner parts and service centers. DRIVERNet pK is available from DRIVERNet.

    Kenworth Inventory Reduction Deals

Kenworth Truck Co. and Paccar Financial Corp. have extended their Inventory Reduction finance programs through May 1, 2001, and added 2001 Kenworth truck models in dealer stock. The "Three-Point Play" program offers retail buyers three financing options with the purchase of an eligible new 1999, 2000 or 2001 model financed with Paccar Financial.

The first option has an introductory rate of 7.9% for the first 24 months of the loan, and then converts to 9.9% for the remaining 36 months of the term. Under the second option, buyers strike their best finance deal with their Kenworth dealers, then Kenworth and PACCAR Financial will pay the first $200 on each of the loan payments for a year.

The third option is to assist buyers who may be "upside down" on trade-ins on an eligible new Kenworth truck. PACCAR Financial will make over-allowance financing available for credit-worthy buyers. For more information, contact your Kenworth dealer.

    Baldwin Filters for Cummins Engines

Western Star to Get Freightliner Components

Western Star Trucks will begin offering new tire, seat and suspensions as it adds components from its parent company, Freightliner.

The Michelin X-One XDA is now available on Western Stars. Introduced last fall on Freightliner and Sterling vehicles, the 445/50R22.5X-One is a super low-profile, wide-base tire for on-highway, heavy-duty trucks. The X-One replaces the dual tire configuration with a single tire that has a larger contact surface with the road, so a tandem drive tractor needs only four X-One tires. The X-One comes on a 22.5x14.00 Accuride wheel. Potential weight savings are as much as 460 pounds per tandem.

Western Stars also will receive a new, proprietary integrated front air suspension and steer axle system. The "AirLiner" front suspension is rated at 12,000 pounds. It uses a unique, lightweight design that shares the load equally between leaf springs and air springs.

This configuration delivers the stiffness and rigidity of a spring suspension, while providing the soft ride of an air suspension. The AirLiner is over 100 pounds lighter than other leading suspension and axle systems. Production begins in April in Constellation set-back axle configurations (49SX). Front AirLiner will be available in set-forward models (49FX and 49EX) by summer 2001.

Western Star also recently introduced the proprietary "AirLiner" rear air suspension. AirLiner rear suspensions are available in tandem 40,000-pound and 46,000-pound ratings, as well as tridems at 69,000 pounds.

Freightliner's proprietary EzyRider air suspension seat is now standard on Constellation sleeper model trucks. .Taller and wider than other standard seats, EzyRider is designed to support drivers of all shapes and sizes.
