Big Bike, Big Rig
Wheel deal for the DeMuzzios
Photography by Tom Laundroche

Big bikes have come a long way since Lewis DeMuzzio, 59, hopped on his first motorcycle at the tender age of 17. Those old cycles were pretty basic; now, Lewis says, "they're like a new car."

These days, he rides a 75th-anniversary Harley Davidson with fuel injection, windshield and a nifty radio-CD player that automatically adjusts the volume according to his speed. "The faster I go, the louder it plays," laughs Lewis, of New Haven, Mich.

Accompanying him on the bike is his wife, Beverly, 47. She and Lewis also team drive their 2000 Kenworth W900, whose cab and sleeper reflect their love of Harleys. The 86-inch Studio Sleeper has a refrigerator, coffeepot, TV/VCR and microwave. A generator powers the appliances, while the tractor's powered by a 550-hp Caterpillar engine running through a 13-speed transmission and 3.55 rears. Harley emblems are everywhere, from the dash to the bunk.

They've been married 20 years and on the road together for some 17 years, pulling flatbeds, oversize loads, reefers and vans. These days, they are leased to Ohio Transport hauling partitions for office cubicles.

Michigan's winters usually restrict the cycling season to five or six months, which is a drawback to living there, says Lewis, who once lived in Tennessee and could ride nearly year-round there. He hopes to go back to that kind of life in the not-too-distant future.

"When we get home, we park the truck and go riding," Lewis says. "When I retire, I'd like to get on a bike and just go everywhere I've seen but haven't had the time to stop."
