Anyone who's ever been in a rollover knows the standard three-point belt system won't do much to keep you from being slammed against the side of the cab. According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 60% of truck occupant fatalities involve rollovers.
Last year, Freightliner displayed an airbag system from IMMI designed to protect your head and upper body. The system will soon be available in Freightliner Century Class S/T and Argosy heavy-duty trucks, according to IMMI, the leading manufacturer of commercial vehicle safety restraints.
IMMI's rollover protection system has three integrated components: A "Rollover Sensor" determines when a truck is rolling in time for the protection device to deploy. If a rollover begins, an" Inflatable Tubular Structure" hidden in the window trim above the door deploys across the window to protect the driver's head during impact. Then the "S4 Seat Pull-Down System" tightens the seat belt and pulls the air suspension seat down to the floor, positioning the occupant in a survival zone, while minimizing head contact with the roof interior.
