Life in the Reel World
With a sleek T2, a Blazer and a bass boat, the Deardorffs haul in the good life.

Ron and Sky Deardorff say they landed the big one when they hired on 9 1/2 years ago as company drivers for Prochnow Transport of Medford, Wis. One of the perks is they get a new Kenworth every year. This year, it's a T2000 they call "The White House." True to its presidential theme, it even has a red "hotline" phone on the dash. The T2 has KW's premier interior: tuck-and-roll paneling, a rosewood dash, loads of storage, a slide-out desk, big bed and "QuietCab" noise suppression.

Another perk is their schedule. They usually run west from Wisconsin to San Diego, then up to Vancouver and back. They work a month at a time, then take a fifth week off the road, literally.

"We go fishing and camping. We've both always been big into the outdoors, long before we got married 11 years ago," Sky says. Even on the road, they can usually log a break when they pass near one of the huge retail stores run by outdoor outfitter Cabela's.

Back home, they park the T2 and hook their '00 Chevrolet Blazer to a 17-foot, 1998 Tracker Marine "Nitro" bass boat. The Nitro has a 125-hp Mercury engine, electric trolling motor, aerated live well and all the electronics needed to stalk finicky fins. Often they head for their 21-foot Jayco self-contained trailer parked lakeside at a resort north of Eau Claire.

They also take extended trips. This year, they went fly fishing in the mountains above Albuquerque, then headed south to Elephant Butte to bomb some bass. But the bass bombed them instead. "The weather was terrible, with 40 to 45 mph winds. We were close enough to the Los Alamos fires to see the smoke."
