Armored cars a growing market

Need a little extra protection on the road? Lincoln has you covered with its new Lincoln Town Car Ballistic Protection Series. Looking like a regular Town Car, right, the car is designed to provide protection from handgun and high-power rifle rounds. Priced at $140,000, the car's tires have run-flat inserts, which allow the vehicle to keep moving even when tire pressure is zero. The polymer inserts allow 30-mph speeds for up to 30 miles. The car will also incorporate a lightweight ceramic armor system, with components provided by Ceradyne Inc.

The global market for protection vehicles has grown rapidly in recent years, but nearly all protection cars on the market today are up-fitted on an aftermarket basis.

Ford plans to make the Town Cars at its Wixom, Mich., plant, and sell 70 percent of the cars in the country. A regular Town Car sells for about $40,000.
