The latest DVDs to pass the downtime

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

If you're a fan of the first two Terminator movies, you won't want to miss this conclusion to the futuristic trilogy. With a reported budget of $172 million, this movie starts loud and fast and never slows down. The DVD includes commentary by star Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Jonathan Mostow, a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the original Terminator machine, a gag reel and more.

Escape From New York: Special Edition

Here's a re-release of the 1981 John Carpenter movie which was set in futuristic 1997 New York. Fortunately, the movie wasn't prophetic, as it portrayed New York city as a maximum security prison. War hero Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, is recruited by police to rescue the U.S. President when his plane crashes inside Manhattan. MGM has re-released the DVD complete with previously cut scenes and a commentary track.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle

Here's a sequel you didn't need to see the original to follow. Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz play detectives loosely based on the 70s television series, but they're all about wilder stunts and an even looser plot. If you're looking for mindless entertainment, this DVD fills the bill. It's packed with extras, including a mini-feature on the cars used in the movie and more than you ever wanted to know about the angel's makeup and costumes.

Hulk: Special Edition

Can't get enough of comic book heroes brought to life on the big screen? Hulk is the latest effort, by director Ang Lee, to showcase a Marvel Comics character. This big-budget movie uses computer special effects to bring the big green monster to life, with mixed results. The DVD includes several featurettes, including short films explaining how the Hulk was made and the battle scenes filmed. In a nod to the Hulk's origins, illustrators from around the world take a scene from the movie and create it in comic book form.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

Here's the second movie based on the popular video game and starring Angelina Jolie as a globetrotting archaeologist holding the fate of humanity in her hands. The movie was released over the summer, and it has all the elements of an action/blockbuster. Jolie plays a cool, independent and incredibly athletic adventurer, and this film showcases her skills in a variety of exotic locales. A true escape movie, no matter the season.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Even if you haven't been on the popular Walt Disney theme park ride of the same name, you'll enjoy this big-budget deep sea adventure. It stars Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow, who is on a quest to reclaim the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush. Available Dec. 2.
