8 simple steps to getting healthy
by Mardy Fones

With the excesses of the holidays already a memory, the time is right to rethink your lifestyle and make a personal commitment to good health.

Some people think being healthy means giving up everything you enjoy. In fact, taking care of you is essentially about doing more things that contribute to a long and healthy life than don't. Thinking that life behind the wheel is a major barrier to good health? Think again — little things matter.

  1. Flossing and brushing your teeth daily are an easy start. After all, prevention is cheaper (and less painful) than cavities and root canals. Wearing your seatbelt is another prevention no-brainer since buckling up costs nothing and can prevent serious injury and death.
  2. Snack smart. Skip fat-laden chips and candy bars in favor of pretzels, air-popped popcorn, jellybeans, marshmallows, fruit or raw vegetables. Or moderate your taste for sweets by buying just a few Tootsie Rolls or Hershey's Kisses instead of a whole bag.
  3. Accent on activity. Build 20 minutes of brisk physical activity — walking, calisthenics or jumping rope — into every day.
  4. Take one a day. In combination with fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meat and whole grains, a daily multi-vitamin can help ensure your body gets needed nutrients.
  5. Overhaul habits. Tobacco use is tied to cancer, asthma and heart disease. Not sure you can give it up? Join an online smoking cessation group such as www.stopsmokingcenter.net.
  6. Drink smart. If you drink alcohol, remember moderation is key and never get behind the wheel when you've been drinking. Cutting your caffeine intake can reduce stress and improve sleep. Opt for caffeine-free substitutes or milk, water or fruit juice.
  7. Simply stretch. Stretching stimulates blood flow and promotes relaxation, so devote five minutes a couple of times a day to it. Reach up. Do a few twists. Wiggle fingers and toes. Do circles with your ankles and wrists. Touch your toes. Above all, remember to breathe.
  8. Learn to laugh. Laughter is like taking your insides jogging, so do it every day. Spend time with people you enjoy, read the comics, listen to funny shows on the radio or watch comedies. Most importantly, learn to laugh at yourself.
