The Red Cross is proudly using a 1998 Century Class tractor donated by Freightliner SelecTrucks to pull a mobile kitchen that provides meals to victims of floods, fires, hurricane and other disasters.
Called the "Spirit of America," the truck can serve as many as 30,000 meals a day. The kitchen was built by Carlin Manufacturing of Fresno, Calif., on a 53-foot-long dry box trailer platform. It's equipped with its own generator, propane, water and electrical systems.
The truck has already responded to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which was pummeled by Hurricane Isabel in September. The Spirit of America served as a base camp in Manteo, N.C., from which a fleet of emergency response vehicles delivered meals in insulated containers to the victims.
