King of Bluegrass: The Life & Times of Jimmy Martin
by Bobby Reed

Music historians know him for his stint in Bill Monroe's band from 1949 to the mid-'50s. Veteran truckers know him for "Widow Maker," a tragic story-song that was a big country hit in 1964. Bluegrass festival attendees know him for his fiery concerts and unpredictable nature. He's Jimmy Martin, often called the King of Bluegrass.

This fascinating documentary tells Martin's life story through a combination of recent interviews, concert clips, and archival photographs. First-time director George Goehl skillfully interviewed several musicians who know Martin well, including Marty Stuart and Tom T. Hall. The most compelling scenes feature Martin himself-a brilliant, mercurial musician obsessed with a life-long (and elusive) dream of becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry. The DVD includes a bonus interview with Goehl, who filmed Martin onstage, aboard his tour bus, and in the woods during a hunting trip. For more information, see www.kingofbluegrass.com.
