The School of Rock
Funnyman Jack Black plays a failed rocker who takes a job as a substitute teacher and turns his fifth-grade class into a rock band. Full of great music, the film doesn't turn into the after-school special, as the plot would lead you believe. Black carries the film, mostly because he's convincing as a former metalhead who truly believes that classic rock will heal you. "I serve the society by rocking," his character says to someone who suggests he gets a real job. An enjoyable comedy.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
This is a remake of the 1974 horror film classic. This one stars the human-skin-wearing Leatherface villain who uses a chainsaw as his weapon of choice. But critics panned this version of the low-budget classic as delivering little suspense and too much gore. The problem is, there's little here that hasn't been already mocked by films such as the Scream and the Scary Movie series.
Panic Room
(Special Edition)
If you missed this urban thriller, here's a chance to see it in a package loaded with extras. This suspenseful story is about a mother and her daughter locked in a room in their new Manhattan brownstone designed to keep out intruders. The Special Edition version has three discs, and includes a commentary track by director David Fincher and stars Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker and Dwight Yoakam. There's also a "making-of" documentary, and an in-depth look at post-production including music scoring and visual effects. All-in-all, an education in film-making with a superbly-shot flick.
