It's more than location that makes the Kenly TravelCenter of America a popular stop for anyone journeying up or down the East Coast.

True, the TA in Kenly, N.C., is halfway between New York and Jacksonville, Fla.

But it's the service and cleanliness of the TA that keeps regulars returning and wins over newcomers, according to Ernie Brame, general manager.

"We pride ourselves on our cleanliness," Brame says. "We have a thing about making our bathrooms and showers a pleasure to use."

The location's high-quality service is rooted in the experience of the long-time employees. Two have been with the Kenly TA since the day it opened in 1980.

"When a trucker comes in, he knows who he is going to see and who is going to help him," says Brame. "Lots of our customers are on a first-name basis with the employees."

Located 40 miles from Raleigh, N.C., the Kenly TA features a movie room and large common area where truckers can relax, as well as a laundry room and a stocked travel store.

On the mechanical side, the TA offers emergency road service, as well as diesel satellite pumps and Pronto! PayŽ, so truckers can refuel and get back on the road quickly.

One unique attraction at the Kenly TA is the stuffed nine-foot brown bear on display inside. The owner of the TA shot the bear in Alaska in 1979, and it's always a conversation starter, says Brame.

"The kids love to see it," he says. "He's like our mascot."
