It hardly looks it, but Dubble Bubble is 76 years old.
The round, pink gum that's usually found near cash registers or at penny candy diplays was created in 1928 by an accountant in Philadelphia. The brand is now owned by Concord Confections Inc. of Toronto and is more popular than ever. Concord's Dubble Bubble plant makes 1,000 pounds of gum every 20 minutes.
According to Dubble Bubble's main competitor-Topps Confections, maker of Bazooka-two-thirds of children chew bubble gum and six out of 10 prefer it to regular gum. The average bubblegummer chomps gum 9.5 times a week.
