Workin' Pickups

Commercial pickup users will have several new choices from General Motors, which has prepared heavy-duty versions of its Silverado/Sierra. The 2500HD and 3500 will replace vehicles of the same name in the phased-out C/K line. The new-series Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks will have the fresh styling and redesigned chassis of their lighter-duty brothers, but heftier chassis with stouter powertrains.

Base engine is the 6-liter Vortec 6000 gasoline V-8 rated at 300 hp and 520 lbs-ft. of torque. New engines are a Vortec 8100 gasoline V-8 — basically a stroked 7400 — and a Duramax Diesel 6100, engineered by Isuzu and built in Ohio.

The Vortec 8100 displaces 8.1 liters, about 495 cubic inches. In addition to a longer stroke, the 8100 gets integrated air-fuel runners and intake manifolds, new pistons and rings, high-energy ignition and stainless steel exhaust manifolds. It makes 340 hp and 455 lbs-ft. of torque. Standard gearbox is a ZF S6-650 6-speed manual; the upgraded GM 4L-80E 4-speed automatic is optional.

The Duramax 6600 is a 90-degree V-8, direct-injection turbodiesel with charge air cooling, integral oil cooler and four valves per cylinder. A 21-inch-diameter fan pulls air through the radiator. A separate transmission oil cooler is used with the optional Allison 5-speed 1000 automatic. The ZF 6-speed is standard. The 6.6-liter 6600 replaces the GM 6.5 turbodiesel and makes 300 hp and 520 lbs-ft.
