Eat the wrapper

Future edible film could coat hot dogs, fruit

Don't be surprised if, sometime in the future, you don't have to unwrap that slice of cheese, but can pop it on your sandwich, wrapping and all.

That scenario may not be so far-fetched. Scientists have recently created an edible film made from natural ingredients to protect foods from spoiling.

They envision this clear film as being used to wrap cheese slices or ready-to-eat meats like hot dogs and sausages. The film could also be used to keep sliced fruits and vegetables from spoiling. The film is made from a fiber found in crab and shrimp shells, combined with the protein from egg whites.

Beyond biodegradable, edible packaging, scientists are also looking at ways to add vitamins to the film. That way, the nutritional value of a hot dog could be boosted by a film loaded with Vitamin C.
