Between the Lines

Audio books help pass the miles

by Jonathan Lowe

My Life

by Bill Clinton
(Random House Audio)
CDs-$35
Cassettes-$35

This autobiography received a great deal of attention when it was released earlier this year, as much for the anticipated revelations as for the $10 million advance Clinton received to write it. Reviews were mixed, but no one can argue with the book's thoroughness. The abridged version offers six-and-a-half hours of Clinton telling his own life story, from Arkansas boyhood to his journey to the White House as well as the cost, both public and private, of the scandal that marred his presidency.

Peace Kills: America's Fun New Imperialism

by P.J. O'Rourke
(Brilliance Audio)
CDs-$74
Cassettes-$24.95

The political essayist and humorist has turned foreign correspondent here in an examination of several American wars, and as a followup to his bestseller Give War a Chance. Visiting countries on the brink of conflict, O'Rourke writes on the injustice and absurdity of the U.S. forcing democracy on people with completely different values. Timely stuff, given the controversy over the rebuilding of Iraq.

Shadow Divers

by Robert Kurson
(Random House Audio)
CDs-$27.50

Actor Campbell Scott reads this true story of two men who discovered a German U-Boat sunken in deep water off the coast of New Jersey, and their many obstacles in exploring and later identifying it. Who could have guessed how difficult this challenge was for the divers, or how this mysterious U-Boat got there in the first place? Campbell Scott, son of the late George C. Scott, is as appropriate a narrator here as he was reading Seabiscuit. The story is almost as complex, and is also part tragedy in that, had the U-Boat not been discovered, three men on the dive team would be alive today.

America (The Audiobook)

by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
(Time Warner Audiobooks) CDs-$24.98

If you're a fan of the fake nightly news show "The Daily Show" on the Comedy Central cable network, you'll feel right at home with the cast of this audiobook. True to form, they deliver a hilarious look at American government, dispelling many commonly held beliefs. Topics include: "Founding Fathers: Young, Gifted and White," "The Media: Can it Be Stopped?" and "Ancient Rome: The First Republicans."

The Codex

by Douglas Preston
(Books on Tape)
CDs-$29.95

Here's an adventure novel about a billionaire treasure hunter and tomb raider with terminal cancer who decides to bury himself with all his paintings and artifacts like a Pharaoh, then leave a note for his three sons with a challenge to find him and earn their inheritance. Don't you wish more trust fund kids had to work like this for a change? The "codex" of the title refers to a book of ancient Mayan herbal medicines, which is among the buried treasures. Complications ensue because a ruthless pharmaceutical company CEO also has designs on the book.
