Wanted: Highway Hero

Goodyear searches for drivers who have gone above and beyond

Tired of hearing about the negative aspects of trucking and truckers?

So is the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. They know that drivers who work on the roads and keep America's commerce moving often are the unsung heroes of the highway.

Their annual North America Highway Hero program regularly brings to light amazing stories of drivers who selflessly risk life and limb to come to the aid of fellow motorists.

Last year's winner was Derrick Harris, a Virginia driver for Schneider National Carriers, saved the life of a person deliberately set on fire; then Harris helped police locate and arrest the person charged with the hideous crime. Harris, a Schneider driver since October 2002, also was recognized by his employer with Schneider's Presidential Citation Award.

To be considered for this year's award, the following criteria must be met:

  • Nominee must be a full-time truck driver;
  • Nominee must be a resident of the United States or Canada;
  • The incident being recognized must have occurred in the United States or Canada;
  • Nominee must have been on the job or on the way to or from work, and in his or her rig at the time of the incident;
  • Nominee's truck at the time of the incident must have 14 wheels or more;
  • Th incident must have taken place between Nov. 16, 2003, and Nov. 15, 2004, to qualify.

    You can get nomination forms and program details by calling the Goodyear Highway Hero Hotline at (330) 796-8183. You can nominate yourself.

    The nomination form also is available on the Highway Hero Web site, which is found at www.goodyear.com/truck/whatsnew/heroes.html.
