STYLE AND POWER

Volvo's new truck, high-powered engine designed for owner-operators

With a long hood and the most powerful diesel engine on North American highways, Volvo's new flagship truck is aimed at owner-operators interested in setting themselves apart.

The VT 880 features the new Volvo D16 engine, with ratings up to 625 hp with 2,250 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful truck engine available.

"Through customer clinics and focus groups, we identified the features and characteristics owner-operators expect on their trucks," said Ruben Perfetti, Volvo's design director. "We then interpreted a Volvo solution for each."

Among the features of the new VT 880:

  • Retaining best-in-class visibility by keeping the long hood and using a massive curved, one-piece windshield;
  • A modern interpretation of the large chrome "Texas" bumper;
  • Four power ratings for the D16-500 hp at 1,850 pound-feet; 550 hp at 1,850 pound-feet; 600 hp at 2,050 pound-feet and 625 hp at 2,250 pound-feet;
  • Larger radiators and cooling packages to meet current and future emissions standards. The D16 and the Volvo VT 880 are available for order immediately, with customer deliveries beginning in June.

Drivers can get their first look at the VT 880 at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., March 31-April 2. For more information, go to www.volvotrucks.com.
