Call to Action: Turn on Your Metabolism
A Preventable Problem, a Reversible Crisis, a Winnable War
By: Siphiwe Baleka, Founder, Fitness Trucking
TRUCK DRIVING IS MORE THAN JUST A PROFESSION. A real sense of “brotherhood” and “sisterhood” has evolved among the men and women who transport the vast majority of the nation’s goods.
This unique occupation binds drivers together in a shared world, apart from the normal, everyday routines of the American public. The lifestyle and challenges that professional drivers face present them with their own set of problems, solutions and experiences. As a result, truck drivers are the support system for other truck drivers. When something happens out there on the road, chances are it will be another driver who helps you out.
Right now, professional drivers have a tremendous opportunity to help Make America Great Again by Making America Fit Again. Let me explain. For some time now, America has been waging a war against obesity, and losing. In 2013, Mission: Readiness, an organization of retired military leaders, reported that 27% of today’s young adults are too fat to serve in the military, causing serious concern about the strength of the nation’s future military preparedness.
A year later, Kevin Concannon, the undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services at the US Department of Agriculture said, “Obesity is not just a health issue. It is an economic and national security issue.”
In 2015 Major General Allen Batschelet of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command told CNN that “Just under three in 10 young people [ages] 17 to 24 can join the Army today – and the other armed services for that matter – and the single biggest disqualifier is obesity.” Later that year the LA Times reported that 67 million Americans over the age of 25 are obese. Another 62.5 million are overweight. Approximately 132 million Americans have a weight problem.
Two out of three women in America are overweight or obese. Three out of four men are overweight or obese. Companies spent $500 billion last year in costs related to obesity and cardiovascular disease. And guess which occupation is Ground Zero in the War Against Obesity? Yup, truck driving. According to the National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 69% of America’s truck drivers are obese and another 17% are overweight. Compared to other occupations, truck drivers also have the highest rate of metabolic syndrome (a cluster of 60 medical disorders and 12 cancers). Clearly, this is both a national and industry epidemic. In order to make America great again, we must Make America Fit Again!
America’s Unhealthiest Occupation
In my newly published book entitled, 4 Minute Fit, I wrote, “Again, this is a preventable problem, a reversible crisis, a winnable war. We should be asking ourselves why we aren’t, as a country, doing more? But then again, we are doing more. We spend more on nutrition supplements, gym memberships, fitness gadgets and gizmos, etc. Yet the obesity epidemic gets worse. What we haven’t done is come up with a single, national movement that crystallizes, concentrates, and galvanizes the public in a simple, observable course of action. Set an example. Make 2017 the year you turn things around. Start today. You can do it with the support of your family and friends.
The course of action I propose is the 4 Minute Movement. Of all the possible courses of action to rally around, why this one? Because I have shown that it is the most effective, least time-consuming way to lose weight, one that has actually worked for the unhealthiest occupation in America.”
So now is the moment when truck drivers can lead the War Against Obesity, and this is a Call to Action among the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of professional truck drivers. Imagine, every single day, at truck stops, shippers and receivers everywhere, whenever you see a truck driver opening the door to enter the truck, you see the driver moving, with maximum intensity, for four minutes in order to turn on his or her metabolism before starting to drive.
Turn on Your Metabolism
What if every driver made this a habit, turning on their metabolism, so that they burn fat while driving? What if the whole nation saw this? What if truck drivers lost so much weight that the industry became a case study in corporate wellness? Truck drivers could become an inspiration for the entire nation to participate in the 4 Minute Movement to Win the War Against Obesity. After all, if my methods that have already helped hundreds of drivers at Prime Inc. lose an incredible amount of weight—if it can work for truck drivers, it can work for the rest of America, too.
Professional drivers, this is your Call to Action. I call on each one of you to follow the 4 Minute Movement battle plan and encourage each of your fellow drivers to do the same. Let’s Make America Fit Again, starting with our unique brotherhood and sisterhood!
