From healthy options to hearty dinners, the remodeled Iron Skillet offers something for everyone

By on November 11, 2015

The Iron Skillet looks different at Petro Effingham these days. The décor changed about a year ago, with a wire flamingo sculpture and a large cow head among the more notable additions. But the most recent change is not just cosmetic — it’s gastronomical.

“Our new salad bar is humongous,” says Scott Reed, Iron Skillet general manager. “It’s a conversation piece in itself just because of the size, and we are able to offer a larger variety of fruits, salad and toppings, plus soups.”

Diners who feel a bit more carnivorous have plenty of choices also. A carving station regularly makes an appearance on Thursday nights, with a prime rib buffet that always draws a hungry crowd. Sirloin steaks, popular every day of the week, are also available on the buffet. And the regular menu includes a hearty hometown favorite – Meat Lovers Pasta — with bacon, ham and sausage. Naturally, holiday dinners are just as filling.

Effingham-ta1“We’ll have a Thanksgiving buffet and a Christmas buffet,” Reed says. “It will be everything you would expect — turkey, ham — like grandma’s cooking.”

Whatever diners choose to eat, they will find it hard to resist topping the meal off with a stop at the candy counter. There’s something for every kind of sweet tooth, from taffy to chocolate to sugar-free options. It’s a sweet ending to a good meal in a friendly place.

Even more food

Effingham-taOver at the fuel building, drivers can find satisfying hot meals at the Petro Deli. Macaroni and cheese, ham and beans, beef goulash, turkey legs, beef stew and more are available in a convenient spot. “A lot of drivers stop here specifically for our food,” says store general manager Susan Wright.

A history of helpfulness

There are many longtime staff members, so drivers know that they will see familiar faces, including porter supervisor J.R. Ritchel. “He started working at this Petro 17 years ago when he was just 17, and he knows every job in the place. He is awesome,” says Wright.

Sharp minds

Effingham-ta4The staff at Charlie’s Knife Shop, which has been on-site for about 25 years, knows their blades. They can help customers choose from an impressive selection of quality merchandise, or sharpen and repair broken knives.

Truck friendly

Driving out to the truck parking area is a smooth ride on the newly repaved lot. There’s lots of room to maneuver and 212 parking spaces, including 17 Reserve-It spots. From November to March, the winterized diesel makes cold weather no problem, and the technicians at the Petro:Lube are ready to handle maintenance, diagnostics, roadside breakdowns, alignments and more.
