Scent of a Dude
Mike Chorazak’s kitchen is overflowing with candles, but not the rosy or cinnamon spice variety. His candles emit the smells of new car, pigskin and campfire — cool, manly aromas he packages under his own roof in Portland, Ore.
“I wanted to take an established product and make it more fun,” Chorazak explains. “One morning I passed a home decorating store. It was just one of those perfect serendipitous moments and boom, an idea was born: Why don’t they make candles for guys?”
So Chorazak quit his marketing job in June 2007 and started the company Hotwicks. He and his wife Sara produce hundreds of the 6-ounce jars daily, which they sell and ship worldwide. For $8.95, you can buy smells like grass, popcorn and yes, even beer.
The company encourages suggestions for new scents on its website, www.hotwicks.com. The list so far includes “steak and potatoes,” “the truck stop diner,” “wet dog” and “engine exhaust,” to name a few.
